The Valley of Silent Men by James Oliver Curwood is one of the fiction best sellers in 1921. A story of intrigue, suspense, action, and above all, a story of love in the furthest outreaches of the Great White North where three great rivers flow; the Athabasca, the Slave, and the McKenzie, and where somewhere is hidden.
The leading character is James Kent who had learned that he got only days to live due to his illness. He decided to confess to a murder in order to save an innocent man. Nobody believed his confession, particularly Marette, a mysterious girl who showed up at Athabasca Landing only weeks before.
Kent’s illness took a turn and his death was postponed. He set about to find out more about the girl, who he ended up falling in love with, even if she would not reveal her past to him, nor what she knew about the murder.
