The House of the Laird by Ida Pollock, Susan Barrie
Karen should not have been travelling on the night train to Edinburgh because she had only just recovered from pneumonia, and it was bitterly cold January weather.

But Iain Mackenzie, who was on the same train, was at hand when she collapsed on Inverlochie platform, and he took her to Craigie House, his own home in the Highlands.

Iain had been badly jilted not so very long before, and when he asked Karen to marry him she was afraid to say "Yes". She was still more afraid when lovely Fiona Barrington reappeared on the scene. Was Fiona really deceived by their mock engagement?
