From Ash: The Gift, The Grieving by Cassandra Cielo
The Kingdoms of Shamar and Golan have been at war for thousands of years. A war utilizing "the gift", a power that manifests, to some, at the age of fifteen. Rina's parents fled Golan seeking sanctuary in Shamar. In their desperation to be free of the slavery and turmoil clouding the land of Golan, they could not see that a child raised in Shamar would never quite fit in. It was believed that the blue volcano at the heart of Golan turned the people's skin from a healthy tone to a sickly pallor that not even the sun could remedy. Though born in Shamar, Rina's skin held the grayish hue native to the people of Golan.

More than anything Rina wants to prove she belongs in Shamar but no one will let her forget she is different. She is moved from school to school receiving ridicule and judgment but this only fuels her desire to prove them all wrong. Her talent, with the gift, does not go unnoticed. She receives an invitation to the most prestigious school in the city. Her dream of becoming a commander in the Shamar army seems within reach but her plans begin to crumble as she is made enemy number one with all of her classmates but namely Rei, a highly respected boy in school, who has a past as clouded as her own.
