Remnant Book One Resurrection by Stephen Craig
Do you save the woman who murdered you?

In the Rift, you are beaten into consciousness, accused of attacking one of the most powerful women in the Commonwealth. You do not remember the attack, you do not remember your name – you remember nothing. Your memory has been erased.

The Nu-U War has ended, resolved through the unexpected intercession of god-like AIs of unknown origin. The world around you has been reshaped by them into an uneasy mix of advanced technology and elements from the Edwardian Period of Old Earth. For a thousand years, a strained peace has been maintained through enforcement of the Covenants by the Inquisitors.

Now, powerful forces conspire to reshape the future of mankind. The Syndic mega-corporations chafe at restrictions on developing newer tech, the genetically engineered Family resist the prohibitions against genetic manipulation, and the Church struggles to maintain a power base in the face of its increasingly reclusive gods.

The Rift, the deepest gorge on the planet, is the perfect place to hide . . . if you can survive. Hidden from view by a curtain of water that fans from rim to rim, the Rift is a dank and shadowy burial ground of abandoned buildings. For a thousand years, the Ares Corp research facility has flushed its garbage into the Rift, there to fester amidst the scientific equipment of centuries past. Under a continual outflow from the sluice gates above, the Rift remains a damp and hellish wasteland. The air is toxic, the water poisonous, the very ground a shattered jumble of capsized buildings, volatile equipment, and unstable materials. Uninhabitable, the Rift's only visitors are Scavengers, man-machine hybrids who brave its dangers to root among the discarded equipment for salvageable tech they can mount to their bodies. Even they do not stay long--the Rift environment is so invasively temperamental, electronics cease to function within days of exposure.

Inquisitor Gwyneth Cargill's life has been shaped by the beauty, intelligence, and duty bred into her by the scientific legacy of her wealthy aristocratic Family. To her, you are subhuman and unworthy of notice. But she needs you. She is determined to investigate the Rift and the scene of her attack. To do so safely, she needs you, the only person to have survived the Rift, to guide her back down.

You are just as determined not to return. After a lifetime of failed attempts, you finally have escaped the Rift. You know, memory or not, that something had imprisoned you in the Rift your entire life, and that, whatever it is, it is waiting to capture and imprison you again.

Consumed by her need to investigate the Rift, the Inquisitor is prepared to use every tool at her disposal to overcome your objections, including threats, intimidation, even her unrivaled sensuality, and that of her own sister. Long-lived and schooled in intrigue--both are masters in the art of manipulation.

What they fail to realize, is that you are both more and less than you appear.
