Not Worthy of the Air you Breathe by John Carey
What would life be like if you ran a nation as a business and annually terminated your low-performing citizens in order to downsize?
“Not Worthy of the Air You Breathe” follows three citizens of One-America through the year 2305. After many tribulations, the world has recovered into a modern "utopia." The recovery though has come at its own price: at the end of every year the citizens are required to stand before their judge to prove their worth to society, at which time the lowest-performers are deemed “not worthy of the air you breathe."
Jennifer is a young judge who is a fan of early American history. Her father has planned out everything about her privileged life, but Jennifer is starting to see the injustice of slowly exterminating their society. She wants to speak up, but it would go against her father’s wishes, is unlikely to change anything and would certainly mean her own death. To complicate matters, she meets a handsome foreigner who offers to whisk her away to Paris where she could escape her problems. What will she do?
Sam is a notoriously average performer, doing barely enough to slide by each year. After an accident and a lengthy hospital stay, he makes the decision to work harder than he ever has in order to be judged worthy at year end, but it may not be enough.
Fred is betrayed by an associate, who reports him for fudging the staffs’ volunteer time for their annual review. This violation means Fred will be terminated at year end. He discovers that his co-worker manages a charity and inflates the contributions raised, by donating to other charities who give back to him. While this practice doesn’t break the rules, Fred believes with all his heart that it is unfair for these cheaters to live, while he dies. He is torn between bringing these con artists to justice while carrying it out in a manner which can’t be traced back to him, because if it is, the son he adores will be terminated with him. Will Fred carry out his vigilante justice or accept defeat to save his son?
