During deployment, all you think about is the countdown to leave, to get back to those you left behind. Unless you’re me. There’s nothing and no one eagerly awaiting my return. So, when a program to be “adopted” for the holidays makes it way around base, I take it. A temporary reprieve from the loneliness I can’t shake? It’ll be my Christmas present to myself. Those in the military sacrifice so much and ask nothing in return. While my family can’t personally thank each of them, we do what we can by hosting one every year. For two weeks, we welcome them into our home and our hearts. We’ve built lasting connections with the previous men and women who’ve stayed with us and I’m sure this time will be no different. Then I meet Boone Gentry and I know I’m both wrong and right.
