When I Wake

Maya Whitaker lives and breathes ballet. On stage, wrapped in music and the movements, she knows who she is. After an argument with her stepfather leaves her financially cut off and forced to quit, she’s completely lost. It’s how she finds herself at an illegal blackout party: one minute she’s drowning in a kiss from a complete stranger, the next they’re running from the cops.

One night is all it takes to pull her so far from herself that she may never get back. The cops have her best friend—the one she left at the party when she ran. Charlie Hollier has deep roots in Little Chicago. Moonshine has been in his blood for generations, and he has the scars to prove it. But he never wanted this life. Before the fire, he was saving for college and then medical school—he always was uncannily good at stitching up bullet wounds. But then he pulled his parents’ bodies out of their house and held onto his siblings as they watched it burn to the ground. There was only one thing to do after that. Now he’s running the family business. He’s not trying to take it straight the way his dad was, either. He’s biding his time and taking care of the people he’s got left. He just needs to stay alive long enough to take out the people responsible for putting his parents in the ground.

Then Maya walked out of the party and right into his life. She’s no good for him. She’s another person he has to keep safe, one more weakness that his enemies can exploit, and a new distraction that could get him killed. After all, Charlie’s made it this long because he knows what most people are too scared to admit to themselves: there is no future for someone like him. And she makes him wish that could be different.

Set in present day, in a world where prohibition was never repealed, When I Wake tells the story of two people from different worlds, falling in love despite how wrong they are for each other.
