When Joseph Drayton, the head of the family, refuses to let his sister marry — and, what’s more, sends her suitor packing — he little knows what turmoil he’s creating for the future. For Jessica is pregnant by her lover, and her predicament has far reaching consequences in the close-knit community of the Staffordshire village of Burslem. Joseph Drayton, Master Potter, is immaculate in velvet and lace, narrow-minded in the efficiency with which he runs the family business but untrammelled in his private ambitions. Those ambitions include Meg, the spirited gypsy girl who slaves in his turning sheds, but not Martin, his gifted younger brother. Martin is bound by indentures to work five years in Joseph’s pot bank, but longs for the day when he comes into the Drayton legacy and can express his artistry in a more personal way. In this he is helped by his friend, Simon Kendall, the canal digger, a humble genius who can neither read nor write but whose vision as an architect and engineer transforms the potteries trade… The Drayton Legacy is an involving novel, rich in character and detail, which takes as its background the rapidly industrialising potteries of the 18th century. Told with humour and insight, the story of The Drayton Legacy will grip all readers who enjoy colourful, authentic historical romance. Rona Randall was born in Cheshire, but grew up in London. She won a scholarship to a local college of art, but circumstances prevented her from taking this up. Instead, she took a secretarial course which she hated. She studied drama under the late Frank Forbes-Robertson and became an actress for a time. After this she worked as a secretary in an editorial office, then became a journalist, before moving on to writing fiction. She married and had one son. She also became an accomplished modeller in ceramics. Novels by Rona Randall include: The Eagle at the Gate, The Mating Dance and The Ladies of Hanover Square. Over twenty years after the The Drayton Legacy, eighteenth century life in the potteries continues. Joseph Drayton is dead and has been replaced as Master Potter by his lame brother Martin. Max Freeman is presumed dead and now Olivia, the daughter he never knew, fights a solitary battle against prejudice and the avaricious ambitions of her mother, the pretty, selfish Phoebe. Olivia’s decision to abandon her claim to the Tremain estates and join the Drayton Pottery shocks her family. She will be relegated to the lowest of labourers in her uncle’s firm. While Olivia works her way up from the humblest ranks, the Freemans — united with the Draytons through marriage — are involved in schemes and feuds. Agatha, widow of Joseph Drayton, hopes to procure the Tremain inheritance for her dilettante son Lionel, while Lionel himself wonders why his father’s body was found naked in an outhouse so many years before. Phoebe defrauds her mother-in-law and is torn between the security of her home at Tremain Hall and the charms of a new lover, Roger Acland. Meanwhile, Olivia can love only one man, the village farrier who has returned from a mysterious past in America, with complications in his personal life creating obstacles in hers. The Potter's Niece is a study of human emotions at their most raw — jealousy and greed; love and despair. Rona Randall was born in Cheshire, but grew up in London. She is married to a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, and has one son and two grandchildren. She lives in Kent. Rona Randall has herself progressed, through pottery, to become an accomplished modeller in ceramics, and the unusual background of The Potter's Niece is one she knows well. Following the death of Martin Drayton, his widow Amelia and their daughter Olivia took on the responsibility of running the business with enthusiasm and delight. However, when it’s wrestled from their grasp once more following Lionel’s return, they’re determined to beat him at his own game and set up their own rival pottery business. Encouraged by Miguel, the bastard heir to the Tremain estates, Amelia and Olivia join forces with the Kendall family and their daughter Deborah, who soon discovers that she has an unrivalled talent for design. With new techniques pioneered by Simon and Jessica Kendall, and Deborah’s gift of introducing exotic new designs into their stoneware clay collection, the rival pottery is going from strength to strength. But disturbing forces are at work and Lionel’s return soon creates an ugly ripple through the normally sleepy town of Burslem. Exercising control over the pottery isn’t enough for Lionel and he quickly turns his attention to coveting Miguel’s vast inheritance. The inhabitants of Burslem soon realise that no one is safe when it comes to Lionel’s malicious quest for power and wealth. And over all this hangs the pervading threat of Carrion House, now Lionel’s home, where dark secrets lurk and the past forever casts sinister shadows over the town of Burslem… Exciting and evocative, The Rival Potters vividly portrays the human emotions of love, jealousy, greed and fear. Like its predecessors, it is a memorable and superbly written novel. The Rival Potters is the final book in the Drayton trilogy, which also includes The Drayton Legacy and The Potter’s Niece .
