All or Nothing Excerpt S.A. GARCIA Scott lit the twenty-fifth white candle. He glanced around his snug studio apartment and bit his lower lip. After adoring his handsome boss for months, tonight Scott planned to reveal his emotion to Thomas. If Scott's lunacy caused unemployment, so be it. Hell, Scott needed to tell manly Thomas the truth, or quit his job. The architectural photographer checked the Pinot Grigio again. There, chilled to perfection. Scott hoped Thomas appreciated the Italian vintage; at $95.79 a bottle, the wine should pour itself into the stemware. He prayed he wouldn't drink the wine alone. He needed a last glance at his romantic speech. Scott plucked the post-it note from under the living room table and tried conquering his nervous squeak. "Thomas, when I gaze into your eyes, I lose myself. I fall into your confident gaze like a feather falls onto a tranquil river. I cannot believe how good falling in love with you feels. I sense our river of love will support us and take us places I've never explored. I love you." Fuck, the words sounded like a simpering greeting card. Too bad, he spoke the truth. The buzzer's harsh tone blared. Scott nearly pissed himself. His poor heart thudded so hard he feared for his skin. Splat, thud! Why had he picked such a humid night for this seduction? Liters of sweat erupted under his armpits. He inhaled a centering breath. Scott buzzed Thomas up. His knees stuttered in terror. Stop! An authoritative knock attacked the front door. Scott whimpered and hugged himself for luck. He opened the door and tried smiling at Thomas. Ga-goo-omigod-help! Scott's speech scampered under the futon. The drool-worthy Thomas wore a red silk muscle shirt. Dark brown arms shone in the candle glow. Snug black jeans displayed Thomas's big, bold bossman's basket to the world. Their gazes crashed and burned. Thomas arched one thick eyebrow in playful confusion. Fuck it. Scott lunged forward. He shut the front door, pulled Thomas close and kissed his sexy boss's lips in aching, desirous desperation. He licked down his cheek until he bit the protruding Adam's apple. He stepped back. "Shirt. Off." less

DOA Excerpt Freddy MacKay Pushing through the throng of people, Marco just knew the night wouldn't be ending well. The angel from the dance floor had been attracting too much attention, too many people, and chances were the brute of a man who had his hands all over the blond wouldn't just let his prize go. Marco had seen how much the man enjoyed pressing the upset client against the wall, and how his angel seemed utterly defeated, not even caring what was happening to him. The blond may not have been crying out-loud, but silent tears, one at a time, fell down the man's face when Marco watched the monitor. And considering how tightly the other patron wrapped himself around his angel, Marco had a feeling the guy was getting off on the blond's suffering. The big hulking brute may not know why the Adonis had tears falling, but the man's body language and smile said he enjoyed every minute of it... a little too much. Marco knew everything he needed to know. The blue-eyed man from the bathroom had his heart broken by a cheating lover, probably ran on instinct, and didn't know what he was actually doing except trying to drown his sorrows. The man holding his angel against the wall probably had a sadistic streak a mile wide. Being that their group ran a bar, Marco had seen men like the brute before wander through, even if his boss, Mitchell, and everyone tried to keep them out of Shepard's Haven. It hadn't been easy considering the bar's seedy past, but for the most part, they had cleaned out most of the scum. Some of the assholes were just better at hiding than others. Grimacing, Marco pushed through the throng of people on the dance floor. Letting his mind wander meant he spent more time trying to get to his angel. Marco glanced at the far wall looking for the blond. His chest seized when he didn't spot the broken man or the person he had been with. Damn, he had taken too long. Spotting another couple making out on the wall where he last saw his angel, Marco walked over to them. He tapped the couple's shoulders, and they turned, obviously perturbed they were interrupted if their narrowed gazes indicated anything. They looked like an unlikely pair, a businessman and a punk, but everybody had a type. Marco didn't think they would know anything since they had been all over each other, but he had to ask. "Did you see where the blond next to you guys went?" Both of the men's eyebrows went up, then a smile crossed their faces and they shared a look. The businessman winked while the punk with the mesh shirt and spikey hair answered him. "You mean the one that everybody was drooling over on the dance floor?" "Yup." "I think the guy gobbling him up took him to one of the back rooms." Of course he did. less

He felt like he had been hit by a truck--wait, no... the guy from Shepard's Haven hit him... many, many times. What was the jerk's name? Frank? Felix? Stephen snorted. No way a guy that big had a cat's name. Fucking hell, what had been the asshole's name? Fagan? Yeah, that one sounded right. The man's name had been Fagan. Stephen needed to remember it so he could press charges once he didn't feel like he was about to throw up, and could open his eyes. Did the lights have to be so bright? Every part of him hurt, Stephen wasn't sure what to move, or if he even wanted to. He wiggled his toes, fingers and hips. Yup, everything worked; he had sharp pains shooting up his back to prove it. Stephen allowed his eyes to open a fraction, just into tiny little slits. His long eyelashes helped to block the glare from the lights. Not wanting to vomit immediately seemed like a good sign. Slowly, Stephen scanned the room. He didn't want to jostle himself any more than necessary. Not until he figured out how badly he had been... was he in a hospital room? Stephen shifted, his body protesting the movement with pins and pricks everywhere, and noticed the IV just beyond the bedrail. His stomach churned when the uneasiness began filtering into his system. Now the damn lights wouldn't matter. Just knowing he had been dumb enough to land himself in the hospital would make him puke. "Fucking hell." Stephen sluggishly moved back to his previous position on the bed. It was possibly the one position he didn't feel like getting sick in. His nerves screamed for some kind of relief, tension and adrenaline had kicked in when he started to remember why he landed in the hospital. How would he explain being in the hospital to Turner? Stephen's heart stopped. No, he didn't have to explain anything to Turner. His partner had Gil now. An overwhelming pressure settled in Stephen's chest. He tried desperately to breathe, but his lungs just didn't seem to want to work. Beeping noises filled the room, and Stephen shot the monitor by the IV a look, nearly losing yesterday's lunch. His blood pressure was shooting way up. Since when did... he hadn't even noticed the other attachments to himself. Damn. A woman burst through the door. They made eye contact, and she walked quickly to Stephen's side. "Is everything all right?" "Um--" Her green gaze went to the monitor that had stopped beeping, and she smiled. "Wondering where you are?" He nodded. Sure, why not? "You're at Greenback City Mercy Hospital." She patted his arm. "Could you stand a few questions and a visit from the doctor?" Stephen frowned. The nurse straightened up, crossing her arms, and fixed her assessing eyes on him. "How about we start with some questions?" "Dora?" The woman turned towards the sound of her name. "Yes?" "Everything all right with the patient?" "He just woke up, that's all," answered Dora. She turned to Stephen, effectively pinning him with her stare. "Isn't that right?" "Yes ma'am." Stephen was rewarded with a brilliant smile. The other nurse nodded, but didn't move, apparently waiting for something. Stephen's nurse glanced back over her shoulder. Dora patted his arm again, but continued watching her colleague as she talked. "He's a little jumpy, understandably," she said. "I'm going to ask him a few questions regarding his health history before the police barge their way in here with Dr Morris." The other woman nodded and left, the door swooshing behind her. For a moment nothing was said. Stephen and Dora just stared after the nurse who had left them, but his reprieve didn't last for long. Dora turned her vibrant green eyes back on him. "As Kara said, my name is Dora, just hit this call button if you need me," she began to explain as she moved around. "I'm going to need your name, have you answer some questions on your health history, take some vitals, and then I'll bring Dr Morris in here. He's going to let you know what your injuries are. Okay?" "What?" "Which what?" Stephen narrowed his eyes on Dora. Was she fucking with him? "Did you say you needed my name?" "Yes, you didn't come in with wallet," Dora gave him a sympathetic smile. "And unfortunately, the bar staff had been unable to find it either." Well, didn't that just pile on more shit he had to deal with? "So--" Dora placed her hands on her hips "--what is your name?" "I don't know." Did he just lie? Yup, he did. Dora's face fell, and her shoulders slumped. Stephen's stomach should have revolted at the idea of lying, but it had been surprisingly easy. More than anything Stephen didn't want to face reality yet. It hurt too fucking much, kind of like the rest of him. less

This week's anthology includes: Broken Wings, Part 2 by Freddy MacKay Minuet in Blue, Part 4 by Cherie Noel To Snare a Fairy, Part 2 by SA Garcia Excerpt: Broken Wings, Part 2 Freddy MacKay Rolling over in bed, Stephen stared at the ceiling, not really seeing it because his room was pitch black, but he looked in the direction of where his ceiling would be. He hated having any light in his room when he went to bed. He couldn't fall asleep if even a minute amount of light sprouted from somewhere. He had blackout curtains for a reason. Turner had always hated the curtains, saying they made the room dreary. Maybe Stephen should have realized something when his partner told him that, not like Stephen would have actually known what he should have gleaned from knowing his partner hated the dark. Turner had plenty of secrets of his own. He kept Stephen in the dark about quite a few things. Mainly that his lover had been cheating on him... for a while. Stephen's chest constricted, a flare of pain throbbing in his heart, making it harder to breathe. Just like it did every time Stephen thought about Turner's betrayal. He wondered how many times Turner had gone behind his back, how many different men Turner let fuck him in their bed, when Turner had started playing around behind his back, and if their friends had known and never said anything to Stephen. That last thought always drove the knife deeper into him. Making it so Stephen turned into an open, weeping wound, his thoughts festering. Constantly itching and hurting just underneath the façade Stephen had put on since he left the hospital three weeks ago--after spending a week there to recover--and went back to work. He wore a mask with a pretend smile. His stilted laugh echoed hauntingly in his ears while Turner hovered over him at home while he recovered. He tried to forget Marco, too. The man had been nothing but kind. But he also scared Stephen. Everything Marco did made Stephen wish Turner could be the one to do it. He even called to check on Stephen after he got out of the hospital at least twice a week initially. Stephen stopped answering the calls. Calls that stopped coming this past week. Stephen chuckled quietly, sadness ringing in the sound. Things really were in a sorry state. If he considered going to work as a reprieve from his lover, and his haunted moments at home, then he truly was fucked. Home should be his sanctuary, not work. Home. Stephen cringed. I should have never let Turner take me home. less

Excerpt: Broken Wings, Part 3 Freddy MacKay Marco paced in the confines of the security room, trying to decide how he would respond to Stephen's call. He should let it go. Ignore the whole mess like his angel asked, but the misery in Stephen's voice made him want to go over to Stephen's house and pull him out of there, beating up Turner in the process. That wouldn't end well. Spaz watched impassively, waiting on Marco, and the inevitable outburst they both knew was coming. Clenching his jaw, Marco tried to work through his anger and confusion over the man. He shouldn't get involved, but he had gotten too involved already if he was going to be honest with himself. Snorting, Marco flung himself into his chair. "Fuck!" "Just go and get him if you're this upset about his call," mumbled Spaz, his attention going back to the monitors. "You know I can't do that," snapped Marco. "Hell, in his message he told me not to call him." Marco jumped up from his seat, twisting and turning in the room, pushing his hands over his head and fisting them in front of him. He didn't know what to do with them, and he needed to do something. Restlessness swarmed Marco. He had to move so he paced like some damned caged animal. "Besides, Mitchell told me I shouldn't go near him. Turner didn't take too kindly to me at the hospital." "No, I suppose he didn't, with you trying to beat him and all." Sighing, Spaz cocked his head, stretching his arms out in front of him. Marco's friend rocked his head side to side, shooting quick glances at him. "Maybe it's better is you just let Stephen go. Hell, at this point I'm sorry I even pointed him out to you." "How can you say that?" asked Marco quietly, shock muting any response he might have had. "You're the one who told me 'to go rescue him'." "And I'm thinking I made a mistake." "Fuck you, Spaz!" Marco took two steps towards Spaz. His body tensed, coiling, Marco was ready to hit the nearest available object, not limited to and including his best friend. Blood pumped through his veins hard, his adrenaline spiking, making Marco's breath short and purposeful. After finding Stephen, rescuing him from that Fagan thug, he couldn't just let go. He could wait, but not walk away… ever. He had to see Stephen's recovery through. He promised to be a friend, to protect Stephen. Pacing again, Marco tried to put everything to focus, but he couldn't. His whole body thrummed with a desire to beat something, or someone, down. What the hell was wrong with Spaz? Marco spun, facing his friend again. Spaz frowned, his fingertips tapping on the flat surface of their desk. Spaz kicked his feet against the floor, the chair sliding away from Marco's reach. "I thought maybe you helping Stephen would help you put the crap with Casper behind you." Spaz stood, slowly following the wall, keeping his gaze focused on Marco. "I was wrong. It's dragging everything bad that happened with you and Casper right back up." Marco surged forward, his fist connecting to the wall next to Spaz. His friend was about two feet from the door. If it hurt, Marco didn't notice. Spaz stopped, keeping his eyes level. less
