Despite their easy conversation and friendship, Eve’s son John is suspicious of the man who has come into their home and taken such an interest in his mother. Eve and Bart grow closer over their shared grief, and their feelings for each other grow, even as John vehemently opposes the idea of Bart becoming a permanent fixture in their home. Eve is forced to make a heartbreaking decision out of love for her son when her friends and neighbors begin questioning Bart’s intentions towards Eve and her land.
