“You might like this.”

I looked up from the textbook I’d had my nose buried in for the last hour. A man stood across from me, holding a book. I read the title and blushed, my cheeks turning slightly crimson. It was a copy of Delta of Venus by Anais Nin.

“How would you know if I even like erotica?” I responded.

He smiled and pulled out a chair, dropping gracefully into it. “Mind if I join you?”

“You already have.”

I couldn’t help but smile at him, at his disarming good looks—brown eyes that made me melt—and at the way he seemed so at ease. At the way he just invited himself into my life. I was pretty sure he wasn’t a professor at the college, and I was damned sure he wasn’t a student. He looked overdressed for a casual visit to the library. Not many students wore what looked like a tailor-made suit.

He reached across the table, flipping the book in front of me closed for a moment, reading the title upside down.

“I think erotica might be more interesting than botany.”

“I’m sure it is. However, botany pays the bills at the moment. I work part-time at the Wallace Estate. They have done an overhaul of the gardens this summer.”

“I know the place. Not a bad gig, if you like getting dirty.” His smile was perfect and disarming, and he had one eyebrow raised. He was mysterious and handsome, and utterly charming … and he was flirting with me.

“Was that innuendo?”

“More like a double entendre.” He leaned back in his chair.

“Touché.” I closed the book.

He flashed me a devilish grin. Something inside of me began to unwind. He was handsome, and I was drawn to him. He possessed the type of charisma and confidence without arrogance that few men have.

He leaned forward, holding my gaze with those deep emerald eyes. “Would you like to get some coffee?”
