Yolanda is 14 years old and has just moved to Mesa, Arizona with her mother and new stepfather and she hates it. At school she learns a dice game called Bunco and meets Billy, the young man who becomes her best friend.
Yolanda always wanted to go to college and have a brilliant career, but instead finds herself as a wife and mother straight out of high school. Life never goes as planned, but she has always had Billy, her best friend, by her side. Yolanda struggles with more obstacles than she ever expected, but she achieves her dream.
Billy has always been there for her, so Yolanda tries to return the support when he’s determined to marry a woman who Yolanda thinks is completely wrong for him. Soon Yolanda is drawn into a situation where she must keep a secret from Billy or hurt him. As her own personal troubles multiply with her mother, son, social life, and career, she is forced to make some difficult decisions, but her friendship with Billy always stays strong.
Yolanda finds love as so many others are experiencing tragedy. The story starts with 14-year-old Yolanda and ends when she is in her 50s.
