VIRTUE: Sweet Regency Romance Clean Fantasy Short Stories
by Amanda Kelly
Harriet, His Grace wishes to talk to you in the study.”
“Harriet!” Charity nearly screamed in outrage. “You must be mistaken, Mama.”
“No, child. There is no mistake. His Grace has asked for Lady Harriet, and Harriet is whom he will have.”
She held out her hand for her eldest daughter, and she obediently rose to her feet, despite her sister’s cries of despair. They didn’t speak until the door to the day room was closed, and Charity’s sobbings were barely audible.
“Did he really ask for me, Mama?”
“He did, Harriet. I had always thought that you might be a comfort to me, in my old age,” meaning that you didn’t expect me to marry, Harriet thought, “but it appears that His Grace wishes you to be his comfort.”
