Underliner by Ruth G Juliano
Everything had always seemed so easy for Benjamin since he became an adult. Money, sex, getting what he wanted - it was all on tap. He was raised to only care about people for as long as he needed something from them, and to believe that if a problem couldn't be solved with charm then it could be solved with money. Frequently underestimated, and tired of being alone, Benjamin returns home determined to make his department the crowning jewel of his father's company. He quickly discovers that a lot of the things were not as they had seemed while he was away. He has no idea what's going on but with the unexpected intervention of an unusual chess club, Benjamin's reality is seen in a whole new light. Developing sympathy and empathy after so many years can have its downsides, but it can also lead to finding the one thing he really needs.
