An Urban Love Story Gone Wrong: True to My Hustler

Love, loyalty, and respect are the three things most women crave to have in their lives. Aneka Collins, at the age of eighteen, thought she had already found all of them in her twenty-three-year-old boyfriend, Kairon Jeffers, whom everyone calls Kai. Kai was her dream come true, but a nightmare to others. He was in the streets heavily and didn't plan to come out anytime soon. As much as Aneka loved Kai, she promised herself that she would never live a life of fast money or drugs. Drugs took her parents away in a sense, so dealing with a man who sold those same drugs was not on her to do list. Aneka didn't gravitate to money like most young girls did. Instead, she wanted a man she could grow with and who would love her unconditionally since she had never known that type of love by a man. Although Kai did okay with his drugs sales and even showered her with the best when he could, she vowed never to be the wife of a hustler.

As bad as Kai loved the fast life, he promised Aneka that he would distance himself from the street life to give her peace of mind. Kai had only been with Aneka for a year, but he knew he wanted to keep her in his life. Therefore, he told her exactly what she wanted to hear, regardless of if his intentions were good or not. All Kai knew was fast money and women. Growing up with a father and uncle who taught him the street life, he didn't know if it was even possible to let it all go, but for Aneka, he would try. Aneka was a different breed, and Kai knew he had to have her when he first laid eyes on her, but he never knew that she would require him to be a different person, even if the person she wanted was better. He was a product of his environment, and he couldn't help it.

Life seemed to be falling into place for Aneka, and there was nowhere else to go but up. After being abandoned by her mother and father at a young age for drugs and forced on her elderly great-grandmother to care for her, she knew she was destined to live a good life. Even at an old age, her grandmother did all she could to instill good values and morals into Aneka’s life. Aneka held on to all that her grandmother taught her and was doing very well in upholding those teachings. When she graduated from high school with a full scholarship to the University of Tennessee to become a doctor, she was grateful that her circumstances didn’t stop her grind. As she planned to excel in her career and beat the odds of being the offspring of two drug addicts, she never imagined her life would be turned upside down in the blink of an eye.

When one night of celebration turns into way more than they both ever expected, lives are changed, and not for the better. They find out who is for them and who is against them. Aneka was the definition of taking ride or die to another level. A level that she would forever pay for and regret.

Love can make you do some crazy things, and as Kai and Aneka go through the motions, disloyalty, lies, and deceit will wiggle themselves in and wreak havoc on their relationship. Will they survive their love, or will their love tear them apart like a hungry tiger who hadn’t eaten in days?
