It’s Liz’s favorite type of morning—normal, ordinary, quiet and peaceful -- when she arrives at her coffee shop, Sweet Dreams, to find a nightmare at the back door -- a lifeless young woman whose last smile lingers on her cold, dead lips. Worse, Liz’s flighty business partner, Claire, wants to bypass 911 and call her new boyfriend and his eccentric group of friends.

West is in the midst of discovering the coffee shop is a scene of supernatural foul play when a set of strange symptoms brings him to his knees. A repeat performance when he meets Liz confirms the cause. Something about her has triggered an inner rebellion against blocks someone put in his brain long ago. Not only memories, but unfathomably powerful abilities.

One blinding instinct emerges from the mess inside West’s head -- he can’t get enough of the woman who could kill him with a glance. One thing is sure, without his protection, a soul-sucking threat could take her away before he fulfills his Guardian destiny.
