Several years later, Lacey's mother announces that she is marrying her longtime suitor, and Lacey must leave the house. Lacey finds a brownstone apartment and works as a proofreader for her uncle, as well as a seamstress. But she is very lonely. Deciding to find a husband, since she can't find one in Boston, she turns to The Matrimonial Times.
To her surprise, a man named Alex Smith, who lives in Edinburgh, Texas, is looking for a wife. Determined to get to Edinburgh to at least be near John, she writes. After several months of corresponding with Alex, he invites her to come out west at his expense with the prospect of marriage. Christmas is coming soon, and she accepts without hesitation.
However, during Lacey's journey to Texas, things do not go at all as she expected. Mysteries, lies, and deceptions are rampant. Is Lacey destined to find her true love out west and have the best Christmas ever, or will she be forced to return home alone empty-handed and with an empty heart?
