Rising Sky Ranch: The abandonment by Chris Stubblefield
My cheeks were pushing up my lower eyelids while the corners of my mouth felt like they were stretching a large elastic band. My lips thinned and the skin on my chin grew tight as I smiled about as much as I ever had. Holding my fingers on my knee, I wiggled my fingers trying to make the ring sparkle in the beams of the morning sun streaming through the curtained window.
“Mom. Dad. Michael and I have some news.” I reached over to take Michael’s hand and pull his hand toward me. “Michael asked me—” My mother interrupted.
“We Know baby!” leaping from he couch on the other side of the room, my mother flew toward me, her arms spread apart. Before I could figure out what was going on, she pulled me up, wrapped her arms around me and started to rock me back and forth. I was certain she had noticed the ring. My father was standing now and moved to shake Michael’s hand.
“How did you know?” I said.
“Michael spoke to your father last night. It was so sweet. He wanted your father’s permission to ask you to marry him.”
