Finding the Lost Pieces: A Story of Loss and Love by RA Yates
High school graduation is the goal of every teenager. For Jack Ray, this is his chance to leave his small town and his two best friends, Kim and Terry, to start a new life in the military. For one last night, at Kim's parent's lake house, they will celebrate graduation and their life together growing up, before embarking on the adventure of adult life. Like many teens, they sit in the lake house, drink alcohol and remember their time in school, together. That night, Kim tells Jack that she loves him. Jack does not know what to do. The next day, he leaves for basic training.
Six months later, Jacks wakes in a hospital. When he looks down, he sees that his leg was amputated after the robber at the convenience store, shot him in the leg. What will he do now? He has not talked to anyone from home since leaving. He does not have the heart to reach out now.
After his tour and duty and medical discharge, Jack becomes a teacher and moves from school to school every three years until he falls in love with a Creole nurse working at a senior retirement village in Jasper, Alabama. One day, his phone rings. His mother has requested that he return home. Jack's grandmother has fallen ill.
Jack is returning to his hometown years later, a teacher. He must face friends he betrayed and Kim, who declared her love to him. He will return to his alma mater, changed. He is missing a leg. When he arrives, he discovers his assistant principal is Kim. Jack must now face the mistakes of his past and heal wounded relationships. A story of loss, love, and regrets.
