FML by Jeanie Johnson, Jayha Leigh
A rescue dog who had dreams of being 007’s sidekick in the next Bond installment, Rocky spent his days lusting after the collie mix two doors down and coming up with new insults to hurl at the neighbor’s dog who was a bit of a self-righteous prick. Oh, and he also kept an eye on his dog dad, Guerreier…not because he particularly liked him, but because his dog mom, Kamini loved the human for some yet to be discovered reason. Whereas Kamini was the epitome of fine rearing, sophistication, impeccable manners, and refined taste (except when it came to her husband), Guerreier was one of those humans who might pick up scurvy if left unattended for too long. To show his love for Kamini, Rocky kept an eye on the celebrity chef because he never wanted Kamini to be sad. The humans thought he slept so much because it was the nature of dogs. The truth was, he slept so much because keeping his humans safe was hard work.
Guerreier Châteauguay Janus didn’t have the typical Châteauguay upbringing that involved copious holidays, lounging about and being fawned over, waited on, catered to, et cetera. While he was born into privilege, his mother didn’t let him have it. She made him earn every damn thing he had, which explained the litany of scars from doing dumb sh*t, like trying his hand at bull riding because it looked so easy on television. Thanks to the rodeo clowns he was only slightly gored by that bull, but to get even, he cooked steak every damn day.
While he was grateful that his experiences had taught him more about life and who he was, a small part of him resented the fact that he’d had to go out and accomplish things rather than being handed everything like his cousins whose sole responsibility was living so that they were the envy of their neighbors in their Westmount neighborhood. Until the day he spotted Kamini Cappadocia who was the type of woman who demanded a man who was her equal in drive, work ethic, and passion. She was the kind of woman that a man would follow anywhere. And he did, until she realized that he was her equal and she was his everything.
Kamini Cappadocia was the Mfing shiznit. She wasn’t bragging; she’d worked her hind end off to get to where she was. Her parents wouldn’t allow her to do anything else. No fainting couches for her or her siblings. After slogging through undergrad and grad and internships, and doctoral studies, she had made a name for herself. But it almost didn’t happen, because early in grad school, she met a guy. The kind of guy that tempted her to veer off of path. But he didn’t ask her. He simply got on the path she was taking and went along on her journey. That’s when she knew he was definitely the one. When they’d exchanged “I do’s” everything in her fell into place. She decided that she was going to hold onto what they had with both hands and fight anyone to the death if they tried to tear them apart.
