The Fourteenth Rilla by Cheryl Boone
A fifteen-year-old girl receives a new identity after a brutal attack that almost ends her life. She chooses Arilla Marie St. James as her name . Avi and Nadine Nebarre become her guardians, knowing that she is the fourteenth Rilla, the greatest warrior queen of all time, and begin her training while she is oblivious to who she is. Hidden within her are all the powers and strengths of all thirteen warrior queens that came before her.
Rilla is a sweet naïve young woman when she meets the actor Michael Sinclair on a movie set. They fall in love too quickly and marry within days. Marital bliss lasts only a few weeks until Michael returns to England to help his father where he becomes an angry man who calls her a person of no importance and refuses to talk to her further. Devastated, she turns to Avi and Nadine, only to find that they have also left her with no way to contact them.
While traveling in an attempt to forget Michael, Rilla finds herself summoned by Winter Rose, her hidden ancestral home where her true healing begins. Better, but still needing her life to have purpose, Rilla begins to assist Sarah Richardson, wife of the governor of Illinois, in revamping the adoption system for the state of Illinois. They take a break and a trip to the Holy lands where they become captives of a nation in the throes of a sinister war which almost ends Rilla's life. Yet it is there in her bleakest hours that she finds the horrifying dark water which heals her physically while also cracking the door open to her destiny.
Sister warriors she has no idea exist begin to show up at Winter Rose, including her self-proclaimed general, Dominique, who becomes her right hand and most trusted friend. All her sister warriors have unique gifts and help guide Rilla in understanding her own while they all secretly become an elite fighting nation, hidden from the world by Winter Rose.
It isn't until an opportunity arises for Rilla to adopt four little boys that peace and happiness descend for the first time since she lost Michael, and her life feels full and complete.
Until Michael returns.
