Sunrising by Susan Hubert
Anthony and Isabella Craig enjoy the pioneering lifestyle they lead in the burgeoning town of Bulawayo, Rhodesia, at the beginning of the twentieth century; until their lives are shattered by the death of their infant son.

In an attempt to pick up the pieces, Anthony accepts an offer from the wealthy and charismatic businessman, Sir James Brooke, to become his partner. This partnership includes moving into Sunrising, the beautiful house Sir James built a few years earlier.

Their lives improve dramatically after this, although they still face many challenges in this wild and barely developed part of Africa.

Then a second and more sinister tragedy occurs, leaving Isabella in utter turmoil. She no longer knows where she belongs or how she will ever cope again.

" 'Sunrising' is a charming period piece, grounded in Bulawayo's early history. Told in an easy style, the novel follows its young heroine's journey through suburbia at a time when all was not as 'civilized' as it would become.
Susan Hubert has done a marvellous job in using historical events to inspire plot twists while never allowing modern sensibilities to creep in and ruin the mood." - PAUL HUBBARD Bulawayo Historian and Historical Guide
